On Sunday (August 22, 2010) the Cincinnati Masters 2010 men’s final lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes. Roger Federer of Switzerland, beat unseeded American Mardy Fish. Federer currently ranked world’s No. 2 successfully defended his title by winning 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, now making it his four title win at the Cincinnati Masters. However, Fish made Federer work hard for the win!
The 28-year-old Mardy Fish shocked many at this tournament with his outstanding performances that have him jumping from World No. 36 to No. 21 by reaching the Cincinnati final. To Federer’s advantage, Fish’s hard road to the final took its physical toll and perhaps contributed to Federer’s eventual win.
As the TV commentators continually remarked throughout the game, Fish has shed 30 lbs in weight in the past 10 months and the benefits are paying off. Since June, Fish is 26-22, and 17-2 since July, winning the last 5 matches in a row against top 10 opponents.
In June he finished runner-up to Sam Querrey at The Queen’s Club before winning back-to-back titles in Newport (d. O. Rochus) and Atlanta (d. Isner).
The Cincinnati Masters 2010 was Fish’s fourth ATP World Tour final of the summer. With the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the U.S. Open at the end of this month, we are anxious to see if his outstanding performances continue.
Were you watching the game on Sunday? What did you think of Mardy’s play?
